Lake Ontario Lighthouses

Filed under: lighthouse lists,Lighthouse visits — karin @ 4:39 pm

My primary source for this list is Great Lakes Lighthouses: American & Canadian, by Wes Oleszewski, unless otherwise noted. I will supplement with other sources as necessary, indicating when I have done so, in order to compile the most inclusive list possible. I will start with the lighthouses on the eastern most point of the lake, on the U.S. side, and make my way westward along the U.S. side of the lake. At Niagara Falls we cross over to the Canadian side, eventually making our way eastward along the Canadian side. Lighthouses with links are ones that I have visited and have made a page about.

Hudson River Lighthouses

Filed under: lighthouse lists,Lighthouse visits — karin @ 3:14 pm

My primary source for this list is Lighthouses of New York, by Bruce Roberts and Ray Jones, unless otherwise noted. However, this will be supplemented by other souces since their book contains a number of “holes” (moreso in terms of the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence lighthouses than the Hudson ones, as it turns out). Lighthouses with links are ones that I have visited and have made a page about.

  1. Hudson City Light (Hudson-Athens Lighthouse)
  2. Saugerties Lighthouse
  3. Rondout Creek Light (Kingston)
  4. Esopus Lighthouse
  5. Stony Point Lighthouse

My primary source for this list is Sentinels in the Stream: Lighthouses of the St. Lawrence River, by George Fischer and Claude Bouchard, unless otherwise noted. Saugerties Lighthouse: Garlic + Lighthouse = Awesome

It has become an annual tradition for the combined forces of the Bouwerie Boys of New York City and the Binghamton Morris Men to descend on the Saugerties Lighthouse for a feast and overnight stay for all who will, following a long day of dancing at the Garlic Festival. A long day spent eating garlic, may I add. Yes, picture it….. over a dozen sweaty men, reeking of garlic, camped on every available spot of floor in the lighthouse – sounds like heaven, does it not? 😀

For those interested in visiting the lighthouse under somewhat less um, cozy circumstances, the lighthouse normally accomodates two couples in private bedrooms, with shared bath. A magnificent breakfast is included. I’ve stayed there under those conditions as well, and it’s lovely, if somewhat lacking in the sweaty morris men factor. 😉

The lighthouse is also available for day use – you can hike out to the lighthouse and view it from the outside at any time – dawn until dusk. Tours of the lighthouse and museum are available from Memorial Day to Labor Day on weekends and holidays from 2:00 – 5:00 PM. Other times by appointment or random chance. Suggested donation of $3.00 per adult and $1.00 per child, proceeds of which go toward the maintanance of the lighthouse. Picnic facilities are available, so bring a picnic lunch and enjoy some time on the river!

Warning: The lighthouse is accessible via a half-mile trail, which is subject to flooding at high tide. Check out the tide charts before visiting or come prepared with tall boots! 😀

Tibbett’s Point Lighthouse

This is my favorite lighthouse in the whole wide world. 🙂

Why?

Well, that’s hard to say………..

  • It’s close to my house (within 2 hours, depending on route taken)
  • You can stay there (always a bonus!)
  • It’s CHEAP!!
  • Beautiful location
  • Classic lighthouse, well kept up

All of that is very well and good, but in addition to that there is just a certain indefinable something………anyway, I love it, and I hope you do too. 🙂

A Photo That I Took 🙂

Tibbett's Point 1More photos are available on Flickr. 🙂

How to Get There:

  • NYS Thruway to Exit 36 (Rte. 81)
  • Rte. 81 North to Watertown
  • From Watertown, take Rte. 12E to Cape Vincent
  • In Cape Vincent, turn left on Broadway, which becomes Tibbett’s Point Road.
  • Take Tibbett’s Point Road out to the lighthouse. 🙂

Back from Tibbett’s Point

Filed under: Lighthouse visits — karin @ 7:27 pm

Another lovely visit to Tibbett’s Point in honor of our anniversary. 🙂 We’ve been coming here for four years on this weekend, or as close to it as we can manage. I love this place so much. It’s absolutely georgeous – one of those classic lighthouses. As a place to stay overnight, it’s a completely undiscovered gem. Part of me would like to keep it a secret forever, and part of me wants to share it with the world…..

I guess I’m going with sharing it with the world, however. After all, that’s what this blog is all about. 🙂

Tibbett’s Point at Dusk

Tibbett's Point 1

We stayed overnight at Tibbett’s Point Saturday night, and then on Sunday we took a little road trip up (east) the U.S. side of the St. Lawrence to Ogdensburg, then across the bridge at Ogdensburg to Prescott, Ont., then down (west) the Canadian side of the St. Lawrence to the bridge at Alex Bay. This was a lovely little day trip, with most of the road on both sides within sight of the river, and with several oportunities for lighthouse viewing along the way. 🙂

On the U.S side we were able to visit the Cape Vincent Breakwater Light, catch glimpses of the Crossover Island Light as we drove along, from various viewpoints on the road, and we had quite a nice view of the Ogdensburg Harbour Light from the marina across from it. As a nice bonus, we could also look across the river to the Canadian side and see both Windmill Point and the Prescott Visitors’ Center (a lighthouse simulacrum)! [The Prescott Breakwater Light was also visible, if you knew where to look, which we didn’t at the time. You can see it in the photo tho’!]

I know, I know…..these pictures suck! What do you want? – we were on the other side of the river, for goodness sake! We were able to get a much better look than these pictures indicate actually, due to the free binoculars on the pier of the marina! 😉
Once crossing over into Canada, we visited three lighthouses, all in the Prescott area. Prescott is just lousy with lighthouses! 😛

Windmill Point was very neat. We were able to climb up almost to the top of the lighthouse! We had a lovely picnic lunch down on the beach, and then we went into Prescott to see the Prescott Visitors’ Center and the Prescott Breakwater Light. The Prescott Visitors’ Center, although not a “real” lighthouse, is very very cool. You can climb up to the top of the lighthouse and see the honkin’ big Fresnel Lens they have in it. Awesome. 🙂

(No, I don’t know what order Fresnel Lens it is. I’ll find out, okay? :P)

After that, it was a nice drive along the Canadian side of the river, then back home to the U.S.!

A thoroughly nice weekend of lighthousing. 🙂
