Lighthouses

Back from Tibbett’s Point

Filed under: Lighthouse visits — karin @ 7:27 pm

Another lovely visit to Tibbett’s Point in honor of our anniversary. 🙂 We’ve been coming here for four years on this weekend, or as close to it as we can manage. I love this place so much. It’s absolutely georgeous – one of those classic lighthouses. As a place to stay overnight, it’s a completely undiscovered gem. Part of me would like to keep it a secret forever, and part of me wants to share it with the world…..

I guess I’m going with sharing it with the world, however. After all, that’s what this blog is all about. 🙂

We stayed overnight at Tibbett’s Point Saturday night, and then on Sunday we took a little road trip up (east) the U.S. side of the St. Lawrence to Ogdensburg, then across the bridge at Ogdensburg to Prescott, Ont., then down (west) the Canadian side of the St. Lawrence to the bridge at Alex Bay. This was a lovely little day trip, with most of the road on both sides within sight of the river, and with several oportunities for lighthouse viewing along the way. 🙂

On the U.S side we were able to visit the Cape Vincent Breakwater Light, catch glimpses of the Crossover Island Light as we drove along, from various viewpoints on the road, and we had quite a nice view of the Ogdensburg Harbour Light from the marina across from it. As a nice bonus, we could also look across the river to the Canadian side and see both Windmill Point and the Prescott Visitors’ Center (a lighthouse simulacrum)! [The Prescott Breakwater Light was also visible, if you knew where to look, which we didn’t at the time. You can see it in the photo tho’!]

I know, I know…..these pictures suck! What do you want? – we were on the other side of the river, for goodness sake! We were able to get a much better look than these pictures indicate actually, due to the free binoculars on the pier of the marina! 😉
Once crossing over into Canada, we visited three lighthouses, all in the Prescott area. Prescott is just lousy with lighthouses! 😛

Windmill Point was very neat. We were able to climb up almost to the top of the lighthouse! We had a lovely picnic lunch down on the beach, and then we went into Prescott to see the Prescott Visitors’ Center and the Prescott Breakwater Light. The Prescott Visitors’ Center, although not a “real” lighthouse, is very very cool. You can climb up to the top of the lighthouse and see the honkin’ big Fresnel Lens they have in it. Awesome. 🙂

(No, I don’t know what order Fresnel Lens it is. I’ll find out, okay? :P)

After that, it was a nice drive along the Canadian side of the river, then back home to the U.S.!

A thoroughly nice weekend of lighthousing. 🙂
