 +  * The original recipe included a variation using apple instead of the flour, and swapping cinnamon and nutmeg for the cardamom and ginger. I haven't tried this, but likely will at some point, since we always have apples in the house but generally only have pears when we buy them specially for a recipe such as this. I will also likely play around with other spice combos on other occasions. I love cardamom, but not all the time, and these are very cardamom-forward (feel free to bump the cardamom down if that's not what *you* are going for).
