Red Wine Cranberry Sauce
Ingredients
- 12 oz. fresh cranberries
- 1¼ cups sugar
- 1 cup dry red wine
- 1 orange (zest and juice)
- 1 cinnamon stick
Directions
- In a medium pot, toss the cranberries and sugar to combine. Pour the red wine over the cranberries and heat over medium heat.
- Grate the zest away from the orange and chop it finely. Cut the orange in half and squeeze the juice into the pot.
- Add the cinnamon stick and the orange zest and bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries burst, 10 to 15 minutes.
- Cool the mixture to room temperature before serving.
Notes
- Can be made sugar free. Complete recipe as written, substituting a sugar substitute in place of the granulated sugar (I used Splenda). I would probably increase the sugar substitute to 1 1/2 c. because sugar substitutes tend to not taste as sweet as regular sugar, even when they say to substitute it 1-for-1. You will likely need to add a bit of cornstarch for thickener because without the sugar the sauce does not thicken as it should. I did 2 t. of cornstarch for the recipe and that seemed to work.
