Devil's Food Cake (Mom's)

Ingredients

Cake

  • 2 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. buttermilk (1 t. lemon juice in milk)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 3 cakes bakers chocolate (9 T. cocoa)
  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 1 t. vanilla
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 t. baking soda

Directions

Cake

  • Beat sugar and butter; add eggs & vanilla.
  • Melt chocolate in boiling water.
  • Add chocolate/water mixture alternately with flour/soda mixture to sugar/butter mixture. Makes a thin batter.
  • Pour into greased and floured 9 inch pans.
  • Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

Filling

  • Boil 1/4 c. 1) cocoa in 1 c. water.
  • Add 1 c. white sugar and 1 T. corn starch dissolved in 1/2 c. cold water.
  • Cook and stir until thick.
  • Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 t. vanilla, 1 c. nuts, 1 T. butter.
  • Cool.

Frost with Heart-Attack Fudge.
